Arthroscopic ACL reconstruction

Reconstruction of Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) is a surgery used to treat torn ligament in your knee. ACL commonly occurs in people who play sports as it puts a lot of stress on the knee. Sudden change in direction or sudden slowing down, incorrect landing after a jump, or a direct blow to the knee can cause this type of injury.

The ACL is one of two ligaments that cross the middle of the knee that connects your thighbone (femur) to your shinbone (tibia) and helps stabilize your knee joint.

Types of ACL Surgery:

A tendon is put in the place of the torn ACL, known as a graft. Full motion and stability is the goal of ACL surgery.

Dr. Aashish Arbat provides ACL treatment in Pune and has performed more than 5000 surgeries. The various types of ACL surgery are:

Autograft: The graft is taken from the body like the knee, thigh, or hamstring.

Allograft: This type of surgery uses a graft from another person.

Synthetic graft: Nowadays graft made of artificial synthetic materials is gaining popularity. A lot of research is going on in this field.

ACL Surgery:

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and takes about an hour. The surgeon removes the damaged ligament and replaces it with the graft. Holes are drilled into your thighbone or shinbone to position the graft accurately. It is then fixed to your bones with screws or other devices. The tissue grows around the graft which is the goal for ACL reconstruction.

Recovery:

You can leave the hospital soon after you recover from anesthesia. After discharge, you are informed about how to change the dressing, putting ice packs, knee elevation while sleeping, and the amount of stress to put on your feet and exercises. Your doctor may even suggest medication for your pain.
